SONOS Amp Multi
Delano News Advance July 2026
When SONOS announced Amp Multi, I was intrigued. Announcing a non-speaker product caught my attention; the evolution of the company moving forward with product innovation and improvement for its app and the product identity captured my mind simultaneously.

As I learned more, it was clear that the company had invested significantly for this product. A multi-channel amplifier announcement isn’t usually a cause célèbre, so I was eager to explore why this one was important. SONOS has long offered amplifiers to support loudspeaker systems but never had the company ventured into multi-channel/zone amplifier category.
My background with various companies has included product planning, marketing and sales of multi-channel amps and I have long been fascinated by these silent boxes of power and loudspeaker drive.
Amp Multi features, user benefits, specs and tech details have been well chronicled. So, this won’t be about the amplifier’s features as much as the product positioning strategy.

Can a multi-channel power amplifier with innovative features for the brand’s speakers be part of a professional channel business strategy? You bet it can. And I believe that it should. SONOS builds its professional channel business through knowledge and relationships with its integrator customers. Delivering a product that serves to simplify installations and support a great customer experience seems a smart way to roll.
My understanding from conversations with SONOS executives is that Amp Multi was developed in close cooperation with a group of SONOS dealers. While it is important for a manufacturer to have a logical product roadmap with ideas confidently developed, engaging dealers in the integration channel to vet a product concept such as a multi-channel amp is wise. Our channel always appreciates this approach. Stay tuned for a follow-up article in which SONOS dealers offer their comments on Amp Multi.
All product development is expensive but power amplifiers, simple as they may appear to be, are costly. They are chock full of transformers, coils, capacitors, transistors, relays, switches and sophisticated circuit boards. All must not only work correctly while remaining silent and maintain a stable operating temperature. No small feat when the first order of business for an amplifier is to take in 120 volts and step it down to millivolts of speaker level output signal for up to 24 speakers in a compact, plastic housing.
The partial use of recycled materials for Amp Multi is a nice bit of brand goodwill and I expect will be suitable the typical fixed installation environment that Amp Multi will be placed. There’s also a clever fabrication detail incorporated in the housing that creates an efficient method of cooling. Fully covered with convex dimples across its top surface, the internal heat is dissipated by the expanded surface area created by the dimples. It looks cool too if Amp Multi is installed free-standing on furniture. Offering an optional rack-mounting panel that keeps a 2 rack space size and creating ½ inch of space above and below Amp Multi is a great solution for racked and stacked amp systems.

Multi-channel amps are not primarily purchased by end-users as the product is usually destined for a whole home system that will include speaker room, zone and group selection and selection of multiple sources. Most consumers don't want to sort this out on their own and seek a professional integrator to pull it all together.
Now SONOS dealers have a product for multi-channel listening that allows them to easily make multi-channel/multi-source listening easy and dependable for their customers. The customers most likely know SONOS, maybe even asked for it from the dealer but would not necessarily be aware of such system capability.
SONOS has positioned Amp Multi as a product with consumer visibility that can only be purchased through an authorized SONOS dealer. This strategy serves two important goals. One is customer satisfaction. A properly installed amplifier integrated with certain SONOS loudspeakers and supported by the SONOS app. Second is a case for business. Authorized SONOS dealers will receive customer leads and be positioned to deliver a muti-zone SONOS music system with a dependable margin result.
The delivery announcement of Amp Multi to dealers for their customers is expected soon. I’ll be back with a follow-up article including thoughts on Amp Multi from some SONOS dealers.
